At the opening of Congress, Professor Joaquín Barraquer, president-elect of the Society since 2007, ceded the relieve of his post to Professor Luis Fernandez Vega, who held the position of vice president, from which traditionally their holders become chairmen of this organization. During the Congress, the Research in Ophthalmology 2011 AWARDS were also delivered. The third of these awards was for Dr. Hernán Martinez Osorio, from Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, for his thesis on "Characterization and cell culture of human ocular surface obtained through non-invasive techniques." Dr. Martinez Osorio has an outstanding research experience in bioengineering of tissues and stem cells of the ocular surface. He has already been awarded several other prizes.
