Barcelona elected office of World Ophthalmology Congress 2018

Competing with London, Paris, Rome, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Budapest and Moscow, the city of Barcelona was the most voted candidate to host the WOC 2018. The election took place on Wednesday 15, at the opening of WOC 2012 which was held this week in Abu Dhabi (UAE). The WOC, which is organized under the patronage of International Council of Ophthalmology, held every two years in a different city and this is the first time they host Barcelona. In Spain, it had been previously held in Madrid in 1933.

The nomination was put forward to the Council by Dr. Elena Barraquer and Dr. Rafael Barraquer, evidencing the success of the presentation as it was the most voted city.

The candidacy committee, which had the support of the Barcelona Convention Bureau and Iberia Congresos, was comprised of ophthalmologists relief, both Barcelona and the rest of Spain, such as Prof. D. Luis Fernández-Vega, President of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, Dr.D. José Luis Encinas, vice president of the same entity, Prof. D. Jorge Alio, Alicante Institute ophthalmology, Dr. D. Corcóstegui Borja, the Ocular Microsurgery Institute and Drs. Elena and Rafael Barraquer whom Prof. Barraquer delegated to participate in this organization.

Both the Ministry of Health and the Generalitat of Catalonia as well as, especially, Barcelona’s City Council or all Universities of Barcelona and the City’s Hotel Trade Association, along with other institutions in various fields, offered their support towards hosting this great event, which will involve the presence in our city of over 16,000 ophthalmologists from all over the world and the concurrence of the entire pharmaceutical industry and related instruments.
