The Eye Bank for the Treatment of Blindness is a non-profit organization, founded in 1962 by Ignacio and Joaquín Barraquer. The aim is to generate consciousness of donations among society, as well as procurement, preparation, storage and subsequent distribution of eye tissue for cornea transplant and scleral graft operations to duly authorized surgical teams.
Through a corneal transplant a blind person can recover full social and working life. Replacement of a damaged cornea with a healthy one allowing a person to see again is made possible by voluntary and altruistic collaboration of citizens, as the eye tissue donation can only be obtained from solidary donations. Eyes cannot be bought or sold ... just delivered.
