Epiretinal membrane

Membrana_Epirretiniana
A type of membranes caused by the growth of scar tissue on the surface of the macula. The macula is a small area at the center of the retina that allows us to see fine details clearly. When the membrane shrinks, distorts the retinal tissue with the formation of folds or wrinkles on the surface of the macula, altering their functionality.

The distorted perception of the object or seeing wavy straight lines can be symptoms to be developing an epiretinal membrane. They usually appear after age 50 are more common in people over 70. In early cases the surgery is usually not necessary, but when there is a progressive loss of vision, or increase the perception of distortion of objects can be removed by membrane surgery (vitrectomy).
