It is a common complication of diabetes mellitus that compromises the function of the retina and may present with severe vision decrease. Surprisingly, even at very advanced stages of disease, diabetic retinopathy does not always lead to visual disturbances. It is therefore appropriate that the diabetic patient to undergo regular eye checks.
