History

Barraquer Ophthalmology Center was designed by Ignacio Barraquer, who combined his professional work in the Ophthalmology Service of "Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau" and then in the "Red Cross Hospital" in Barcelona, with its private sector.
The private ophthalmologist Ignacio Barraquer, where he served until 1940, was located at No. 3 from the central Ronda de Sant Pere de Barcelona, corner of the Plaza de Catalunya, and consisted of a ground floor and first floor.
Withthe aim to offer their knowledge and expertise to patients with limited financial resources, Ignacio Barraquer introduced the Social Work funded with own resources, by which these patients were looked after by applying reduced rates.
Therefore, it can be said that the consultation of the Ronda de Sant Pere was the germ of what would become his greatest work: the Clinica Barraquer.

When early in the 1930 Ignacio Barraquer was raised to build a monograph devoted exclusively to clinical ophthalmology in the neighborhood of Sant Gervasi Barcelona, his colleagues at the time called him a "mad visionary" by shifting its center crowded consultation city to the suburbs, claiming that no patient would not go to a place so "far". Subsequent events were commissioned to show just the opposite.
Barraquer Ophthalmology Center is a private institution dedicated to research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of ocular diseases, which offers assistance to patients around the world. The building that houses it is located on Muntaner Street No. 314 (Barcelona), and construction began in 1934, completing its first phase in 1941. Essentially the same distribution was presented today, but only consisted of a ground floor, two floors and an attic. In the 50's, a new building was erected in the street next to the first Laforja construction, and in the 70's, it was expanded with the addition of three floors, keeping the highest possible architectural coherence with the original.
Thanks to the work of this team, the Barraquer Clinic building reached the highest level of technology and avant-garde of the time. Ignacio Barraquer clinic conceived his idea of modernity, scientific rationalization and opening up to more advanced procedures and techniques, both in the field of medicine and the services offered to patients to feel welcome with humanity and intimacy .
In 1971, following the international fame achieved by Joaquín Barraquer and new techniques applied by himself and his team, it was necessary to expand and modernize the existing building, which was conducted under the supervision of Joaquin Barraquer own. The project was led by architect Salvador Capella Sagalés. Since then, there have been ongoing renovations at the Centre, to provide the best care to patients.
