Was forged early with his father, who accompanied his garage, where he performed manual labor or precision in order to acquire the skills necessary to become a surgeon. His vocation for ophthalmology blossomed early: "I began to observe the work of my father at the age of 11 years. He spent long hours visiting patients, working in the lab, studying medical records and attending their surgeries. It is to the thirteen years I remember my father was operating a waterfall, and I witnessed the operation helping ... "
Joaquín Barraquer Eye Surgery is Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), director of the Institut Universitari Barraquer (affiliated to the UAB), executive director of Instituto Barraquer, founding director of the Eye Bank for treatment of blindness, and surgeon director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, where he formed a team of ophthalmologists from those found, from his marriage to Mariana Andrade Compte, children Elena and Raphael, and his wife, Marinka Kargachin.
From 1961 onwards, has worked as an instructor in several courses each year of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, deserving Teaching Award in 1972. He has presented numerous lectures and courses in universities, medical colleges and graduate schools in ophthalmology on five continents.
Joaquin Barraquer in 1957 discovered the action of the human zonule alfaquimotripsina on and developed the technique of "enzyme zonulolisis" surgical procedure that significantly facilitated the extraction or total intracapsular cataract. In simple terms, Joaquín Barraquer himself compares the two methods: "We can compare the old method in connection with the modern as if, instead of starting a dry seal an envelope, prior to wet, soften the glue, off smoothly and with greater ease. "
Throughout his career, Joaquin Barraquer has designed numerous instruments and has developed original procedures for the treatment of eye problems. Always work to "open doors" to facilitate teaching and share their ideas and experiences directly with their colleagues and students, and through a wide dissemination of books, articles in professional journals and conferences. Among his discoveries and innovations are the following:
- In collaboration with his brother Jose Ignacio, Joaquin Barraquer in 1964 developed a special microscope for microsurgery, since the prototype employee since 1953 lacked slit lamp, whose use is very important for allowing biomicroscopy, vision of an "optical section" transparent media of the eye, comparable to a CT scan instantly.
- In 1965, in collaboration with Hans Litmann, Zeiss optical engineer, devised another special microscope to film or television shoot in microsurgical procedures.
- Joaquín Barraquer is among the pioneers in the world including intraocular lenses, and also designed an original model.
- In 1995, in collaboration with Corneal WK, a special lens designed to correct myopia between -10 and -30 D. This lens is placed behind the iris, the pupil centered, respecting the clear lens.
Joaquín Barraquer has managed to convey to all the people around you in your daily work, in addition to his professional enthusiasm, his affable manner with patients, creating in them, thus, feelings of security and confidence. As he himself says: "... the ophthalmologist requires significant manual dexterity, but I think that's just enough ... for many technological advances, and for many instruments we use, nothing can replace the" clinical eye ... "".
