Lines of Research
“Joaquín Barraquer”s Chair of Research in Ophthalmology (CJBIO) has become a major research institution located in a building adjacent to the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, so as to have greater capabilities and facilities which include –among other- an administrative area of offices, meeting rooms, a chemical-analytical laboratory and an optical microscopy lab, a stabulary or animal facility and an operating room duly equipped for its experimental activity.
Main lines of research:
Study of safety and efficacy of new medical or surgical treatment procedures. New therapies have been tested for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or external eye infections.
Evaluation of treatment results already established, to obtain optimal visual quality both day and night after cataract surgery and refractive surgery.
Presbyopia or longsightedness. The CJBIO project is developing an artificial lens alternative to current intraocular lenses. At the experimental level surveys study the biomechanical and optical characteristics of the natural lens, with a view to their replacement with an injectable material capable of replicating the physiological accommodation and restore good vision without glasses both far and near.
Ocular surface: treatment of serious conditions, ranging from some which are congenital, such as aniridia, to those caused by chemical trauma. A novel strategy is to replant the cornea with cultured epithelial stem cells. For this purpose, the CJBIO incorporated with a new cell culture lab in late 2008.
