Dr. Elena Barraquer
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1977). She continued her education in the United States, through a research grant she obtained from the National Eye Institute (Bethesda, Maryland). She further followed a fellow program at the Wilmer Eye Institute (Baltimore), worked at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, and she completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, in the period 1984-1987. She was admitted as fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and later on she settled in Torino (Italy).
She returned to Barcelona in 2002, assuming the Attached Medical Director task at Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre where cataract surgery outstands from her clinical practice. In 2004 she led the first humanitarian expedition for ophthalmologic assistance of the Barraquer Foundation, of which she is the executive director. At present, she travels several times a year to Africa, to operate cataracts.
In 2009, in recognition of her work, she was awarded "La Llave de Barcelona" (Barcelona’s key) for her outstanding contribution to the universalization of the city.
