He got his title of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 1994 ( further homologated in Spain in 2005). Specialist in Ophthalmology at the Universidad National de Colombia (2000, title homologated in Spain in 2007). University Master in Ocular Surface, Uveitis and Refractive Surgery (2005), and he got his doctorate in Vision Sciences from Universidad de Valladolid, with the qualification of excellent "Cum Laude" (2010).

He has an outstanding research expertise in the area of stem cells and tissue bioengineering of the ocular surface.

He has won several awards, most notably the Rhone Poulenc Rorer (National Academy of Medicine) VIII Award, and he has published numerous articles and presentations at international congress.
