Refractive Laser Surgery

Refractive laser surgery is the most used method for correcting mild and moderate refractive defects such as:

Myopia (near sightedness)
Hyperopia (far sightedness)
Astigmatism

Although Lasik is a more commonly known procedure, there are other options that can be done to help improve the vision without glasses. These are PRK and SMILE. During your complimentary consultation with our experts, they will guide you for the best option in your case.

Practical aspects of the procedure

The pre-operative period

At the first visit, your current prescription and the state of your eye health will be evaluated. Additional tests will be carried out to determine the main parameters of the cornea. Depending on these results, the most advisable type of procedure will be determined in each individual case.
The patient should stop using contact lenses at least 2 days before the initial consultation and 15 days before the operation.
A few days before the operation, a series of tests will be performed to confirm the previous data and determine suitable treatment parameters.

The procedure

Anaesthetic eye drops are applied before the operation. It is an outpatient surgery, although the patient will have to remain in the clinic for a few hours.
The patient can go back home on the same day and return 24 hours later for an initial follow up.
Vision recovery is fast although a bit blurry the first 24-48 hours after the surgery. Barraquer uses the most modern technologies, which indeed help for a faster recovery.

Is age a factor for Refractive Laser Surgery?
Refractive laser surgery is generally performed from the age of 21 until the early 40s. Based on many factors, including vision, the degree of refractive error, the presence of dryness, our surgeons will assess whether you are a good candidate and what technique would be best for your case.
Can I have both eyes done with Lasik Eye Surgery at the same time?
You can have bilateral simultaneous LASIK eye surgery (both eyes done at the same time). In most cases, bilateral LASIK eye surgery is recommended, and it has been shown to be safe and effective.
Can I drive immediately after having Lasik Eye Surgery?
Visual recovery is fast, but it is common to have blurry vision and/or discomfort during the first 24-48 hours. Therefore, it is not recommended to drive during that period of time after undergoing the LASIK procedure.
How long will I be out of work after having Lasik Eye Surgery?
It depends on the type of work. Majority of the patients can return to work after 24 hours. If the job requires intense clarity in vision, or the work environment is not safe, then it is best to ask your doctor for advice.
Is it painful?
LASIK surgery is not usually painful. However, it is normal to feel some discomfort, dryness or even tearing the first 24-48 hours. There are some measures taken to ensure that the patient feels the least discomfort during and after the procedure with the best results.
