What is it?

Cataracts are the most common causes of a loss of vision and they are due to opacification of th crystalline lens, the eye's natural lens. Cataract surgery, the definitive surgery for this pathology, is a simple and safe procedure, as long as it is performed by a specialist team.

What does the operation involve?

Cataract surgery involves extracting the opaque content of the crystalline lens using ultrasounds and replacing it with a personalised intraocular lens (IOL):

  • Monofocal IOL, which provides an excellent quality of vision but they only have one focus point
  • Multifocal IOL, which enables the patient to see well at far, intermediate and short distances
  • Extended depth of focus IOL, which enables the patient to see properly both at far and intermediate distances

The patient is discharged immediately after the procedure. The following day, the bandage is removed from the eye and the patient starts antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment. This procedure is usually performed on one eye and then the other a few days after.
