Looking after their eyes

A child's comprehensive development largely depends on proper evolution of their eyesight. Howver, it is estimated that 20% of children suffer from visual impairments. The most common pathologies include lazy eye, strabismus and refractive errors (myopia, astigmatism, and hypermetropia). They all have a good prognosis if they are diagnosed early.

According to specialists, what we do not learn to see during childhood cannot be restored in adulthood, which is why it is fundamental to look after our eyesight from an early age. Ensuring good eye health is investing in a quality life for the future.

Childhood pathologies

Some eye diseases are more common in children:

  • Refractive errors (myopia, astigmatism or hypermetropia): If they are not corrected, they lead to a visual impact with difficulties to focus, eye fatigue and headache. They are a reason behind poor performancec at school.
  • Lazy eye or amblyopia: there is a high chance of recovering if it is diagnosed before the age of four.
  • Strabismus: It can be reversible if it is treated at an early age.
  • Structural abnormalities of the eye, like congenital cataracts, eyelid ptosis (droopy eyelids) and corneal opacity.

When to take them to the ophthalmologist

  • Birth: first eye examimnation to rule out any congenital abnormalies or other eye problems.
  • At the age of 2: a full eye exam should be performed by a specialist, even if there is no apparent symptomology. It's the time to rule out strabismus, lazy eye and refraction issues.
  • From the age of 2 to 8: annual check-ups are recommended, although they do not have any pathologies, given that this is the period where visual learning is developed.
  • From the age of 8: We can space out check-ups to every two years until reaching legal age, although the frequency will always depend on each individual case.
