Tips to protect the kid’s eyesight this summer

I would like to share with you some tips to consider for our little ones during the summer holidays now that the schools are finished.

A Pediatric Eye Health Reminder for the Summer Holidays

One of the first and most important things to consider during the summer is managing children’s screen time.

The first one is about the use of screens. Now it is a good opportunity to spend less time with screens and more time outdoors. If they need to use screens, remember to follow the basic rule of not spending more than 2 hours a day in children under 17 years of age, as per the World Health Organization guidelines. And that includes weekends.

Medical Guidance on Sun Protection for Children’s Eyes

Exposure to the sun is significantly higher in summer, and while outdoor activities are healthy and enjoyable, excessive UV exposure can affect your child’s eyes.
Secondly, when outdoors, you should be aware of avoiding the hours of maximum exposure to the sun, that is from 12 PM until 4 PM, and always use adequate eye and skin protection, by wearing hats or caps, sunglasses, and sun cream.

Specialist Advice: How to Handle Itchy or Dry Eyes

Water activities are popular during the hot season, but they come with potential risks to eye health if proper precautions aren’t taken.
Third, it is important to wear googles to protect their eyes during water activities, and if they feel any discomfort, use artificial tears to clean and moisturize their eyes.

Managing Common Summer Eye Discomfort

itchy, dry eyes are common complaints during warmer months due to allergens, dryness, or overexposure to sun and wind. Fortunately, these can be managed easily with proper care.
Finally, if they report itching or dryness, they should always use artificial tear drops and totally avoid rubbing the eyes.

I wish you a happy summer!
