Don't Let Diabetes Take Away Your Vision

Diabetic retinopathy, a condition of the eye, is one of the foremost causes of blindness in the world. While this statistic is indeed shocking, many individuals fail to realize the symptoms. It's important to get a screening test as a first step towards preventing vision loss. The earlier doctors catch Diabetic Retinopathy, the more treatable the disease will be.

What happens when diabetic retinopathy is left untreated?

Not getting Diabetic Retinopathy treated on time can lead to permanent vision loss. In fact, it's one of the most common causes of vision loss.

If you're diagnosed with diabetes, the delicate blood vessels at the back of your eye get damaged and weak. They start leaking blood and plasma into your retina, making the tissues swell, and leading to blurry vision. If your body in turn tries to create newer, more fragile blood vessels, these can burst and result in blindness.

Unfortunately, the early stages of diabetic retinopathy are without symptoms, which is why getting your eyes screened is pivotal.

The symptoms in later stages include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Wavy lines
  • Progressive or sudden loss of vision
  • Floaters
  • Faded colors

The treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy includes:

  • Getting an early screening done
  • Keeping your blood sugar and pressure under control
  • Having a healthy diet
  • Intraocular injections for more advanced stages of Retinopathy
  • Laser treatment
  • For very advanced stages, a vitrectomy

Don't forget regular eye screenings!

If you're diagnosed with diabetes, the most pivotal step you can take for your vision is getting your eyes screened at least once a year by an Ophthalmologist. Even if you have perfect vision, it's important that you do this.

The process is quick and simple, and you get the results quickly after getting your eye dilated with drops. Not only can you check for Diabetic Retinopathy, but also look for other eye problems.

Those who've been diagnosed with diabetes recently should get an eye examination straight away to ensure that their eyes are healthy. Pregnant women with diabetes must get checked every trimester.

Even if your diabetes is under control, your annual screening should be a must.

Fortunately, if it's caught early, or even at an advanced stage, there are treatment options available. Experts at Barraquer Eye Hospital use state-of-the-art technology and expertise for the best results.
