The symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy and its complications were the object of the course organised by Instituto Universitario Barraquer on March 8 and 9, at the AXA Auditorium in Barcelona, with the participation of over 250 attendees.

The course, coordinated by Dr. Javier Elizalde, was structured around three thematic blocks: symptoms and diagnosis, diabetic maculopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The eminently practical nature of the course, which already included a session with five clinical cases, moderated by Dr. Santiago Abengoechea, made possible to discuss the case studies between the panel of experts and the audience, who were able to participate through an interactive device.

A special conference, by Dr. Jeroni Nadal presented his experience with the artificial vision device ARGUS II, as it has achieved very good results with the patient treated.

Upon concluding the course, Dr. Rafael Barraquer paid tribute to Professor Ignacio Barraquer on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death. In his conference “In memoriam”, Professor Joaquín Barraquer highlighted the most relevant aspects of his father’s life, one of the founders of modern ophthalmology. The presentation concluded with a magnificent performance by the Geriona Choir.

The next day, the RETINA BARCELONA session took place, where 16 experts from all over Spain presented complex clinical cases for discussion among the speakers and attendees, in order to achieve the optimum treatment of patients.
