Changes you will notice in your vision after LASIK surgery

12/08/2025

LASIK surgery (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most popular and effective procedures for correcting refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. One of the most common questions patients ask is what changes they can expect in their vision after LASIK, and when they will see the final results.

How vision improves after LASIK

Most patients experience a significant improvement in vision just a few hours after the procedure. In many cases, vision stabilises within the first 24 to 48 hours, although full visual recovery may take anywhere from a few weeks to three months.

What effects will I notice after LASIK surgery?

It is normal to experience certain temporary effects during the recovery process:

  • Blurred vision after LASIK, especially on the first day.
  • Light sensitivity.
  • A gritty sensation or dry eyes.
  • Fluctuating vision throughout the day.

These effects usually resolve gradually. Initial blurred vision tends to improve within the first few days, and dry eyes can be managed with lubricating eye drops.

When does vision stabilise after LASIK?

Although many patients regain functional vision within 24–48 hours, complete stabilisation may take several weeks. During this period, mild visual fluctuations may occur, especially in low-light conditions.

Night vision after LASIK Surgery

One of the most commonly reported effects is altered night vision. Some patients notice changes in visual perception when driving at night or in dimly lit environments, such as seeing glare and halos around lights.

In general, these effects may occur due to poor surgical indication (e.g. patients with naturally large pupils) or the use of older laser technologies that do not allow for wide treatment profiles.

How long does vision take to recover after LASIK?

Overall, visual recovery is fast. Many patients are able to return to their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. However, achieving perfect and stable vision may take between one and three months. It is essential to follow the specialist’s instructions and attend all scheduled check-ups.

Side effects of LASIK on vision

Although LASIK is a safe technique with a high satisfaction rate, some side effects may appear, such as dry eyes or fluctuating vision. In some cases of hyperopia, visual recovery may take longer due to physiological factors.

These effects are uncommon and mostly temporary. A thorough preoperative assessment helps to minimise potential risks.

LASIK is an effective option for those wishing to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Understanding how vision improves after LASIK, and what typical changes to expect, helps patients approach the process with peace of mind and realistic expectations.
