How to know if I’m suitable for ICL lenses

25/06/2025

Collamer intraocular lenses (ICL) represent an advanced option for correcting refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. However, not all patients are suitable for this type of procedure. Below are the criteria that determine whether you are a candidate for ICL lenses

Who can have ICL lenses?

To be considered an ideal candidate for ICL lenses, it’s important to meet certain requirements:

  • Age: You should be between 21 and 45 years old. In some selected cases, the procedure may be done outside this age range.
  • Stable prescription: Your prescription must have remained stable for at least one year, with no significant changes.
  • Eye health: You must not have any eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or keratoconus. It’s also essential to have an adequate number of endothelial cells in the cornea to ensure proper recovery.

Requirements for ICL lenses

In addition to the above criteria, the following aspects should also be considered:

  • Anterior chamber depth: There must be sufficient space to accommodate the lens without affecting other structures in the eye.
  • Medical contraindications: Systemic conditions such as autoimmune diseases or uncontrolled diabetes can affect healing and the success of the implant.

Am I suitable for ICL lenses?

To determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure, a complete ophthalmological evaluation is essential, including:

  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Assessment of corneal and lens health
  • Analysis of anterior chamber depth
  • Endothelial cell count

Criteria for ICL lens implantation

ICL lenses are especially recommended for:

  • Patients with thin corneas: Those who are not suitable candidates for laser surgeries like LASIK due to insufficient corneal thickness.
  • People with chronic dry eye: Since the procedure does not alter the corneal surface, it is a favourable option for those with this condition.
  • Individuals seeking a reversible solution: Unlike other refractive surgeries, ICL lenses can be removed or replaced if necessary.

Determining whether you are a good candidate for ICL lenses requires a detailed evaluation by a specialised ophthalmologist. Meeting the above criteria is essential to ensure the success of the procedure and to improve your visual quality. If you are considering this option, consult a specialist for personalised guidance.
