Today, cataract surgery can correct several vision problems in a single procedure.

Most patients who develop cataracts also have other age-related vision problems, such as presbyopia, or pre-existing refractive errors, such as astigmatism. One of the advantages of modern cataract surgery is that these conditions can be addressed during the same procedure through the implantation of specific intraocular lenses.

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular curvature, resulting in distorted vision at both near and far distances. Toric intraocular lenses are designed to compensate for this irregularity, improving visual clarity and reducing the need for additional optical correction.

As for presbyopia, a natural age-related change in vision that makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects, certain multifocal or advanced-technology lenses can extend the range of vision, making activities such as reading, using a mobile phone or working on a computer easier without relying as much on glasses.

However, not all lenses are suitable for every patient. It is essential to carry out precise diagnostic tests and assess the overall health of the eye. The condition of the retina, contrast sensitivity and certain pre-existing conditions may influence the final recommendation.

Learning about the available options and clearly expressing visual expectations helps patients play an active role in the decision-making process. Cataract surgery can be not only a necessary treatment but also an opportunity to improve vision at different distances through a personalised approach.
