  1. Safety and Efficacy Study of new medical or surgical treatments. New therapies for age-associated macular degeneration have been trialled, for diabetic retinopathy or external eye infections.
  2. Assessment of outcomes of established treatments to obtain optimum visual quality, both during the day and at night, after cataract surgery and refractive surgery.
  3. Presbyopia or tired eyes: The Joaquin Barraquer Chair of Research in Ophthalmology is developing an artificial lens project, an alternative to the current intraocular lens. On an experimental level, there are studies on the biomechanical and optic properties of a natural lens, in regards to its substitution for a injectable material which is able to replicate the physiological accommodation processes and restore vision without requiring glasses for short or long distances.
  4. The ocular surface: treatment of serious conditions, ranging from the congenital, such as aniridia, to those causes by chemical trauma. A novel strategy consisting of repopulating the cornea with cultivated epithelial stem cells. To do this, at the end of 2008 the Joaquin Barraquer Chair of Research in Ophthalmology opened a new laboratory for cell cultivation.
