Solutions to complex cases

We analyse new therapies and materials to treat serious eye surface diseases.  We want efficacious and safe solutions for cases in which conventional treatments have failed. To find them, we study the risk-benefit relationship of different types of keratoplasties and keratoprostheses.

Epidemiological studies

We aim to improve knowledge on the variability of adult healthy eye structures and their development from infancy.

Cataracts and refractive surgery

In addition, we believe in the continuous evaluation of established treatments that make possible an improvement in the visual quality of patients who undergo cataract surgery or refractive surgery.

Glaucoma

If an eye disease is chronic (there is no cure for it), such as glaucoma, apart from participating in clinical trials to find new drug treatments, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of new surgical techniques. We work to provide evidence based decisions in clinical practice and keep to a minimum the effects of the progression of a disease, using the most cutting-edge instruments in our studies.

Early detection

We would like to detect certain retina diseases such as an idiopathic macular hole as soon as possible. Thus, we study the anatomy and functionality of the unaffected contralateral eyes. Our objective is to establish possible risk markers for bilateral onset and find out more about how this disease is triggered. In the future, we will be able to treat patients more immediately, thereby minimising lesions.

Other studies

We have studied the relationship between the molecular changes in the brain and the crystalline lens of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. We also analyse the optic and biomechanical properties of the lens to expand the knowledge on the accommodation process and its physiological loss with age. Lastly, we conduct experimental studies aimed at the regeneration of eye tissue and the prevention of posterior capsule opacification of the lens after cataract surgery.
