Transformative training: the testimonies of the students of the masters programms of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre

One more year, Barraquer has welcomed the new Academic Year 2025-2026 in our Auditorium II located in C/ Laforja 51, in Barcelona. This event marks the beginning of a new cycle of training, innovation and excellence in the field of ophthalmology. The inauguration, held yesterday, October 14, brought together teachers, specialists and students to start this new academic stage together.
A protocol act with academic tradition
The ceremony began with the traditional parade of togats, which was attended by personalities and representatives of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the International University of Catalonia (UIC), members of the Royal National and International Academies of Medicine and doctors of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre. The protocol act highlights the value that Barraquer grants to knowledge and academic excellence. Throughout the day, the atmosphere in the auditorium combined the illusion of new beginnings with the solid academic tradition that the institution maintains and celebrates every year.
The person in charge of opening the ceremony and welcoming the attendees was Prof. Rafael I. Barraquer, President of the Governing Board of the Barraquer Institute and Medical Director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre. With his words he conveyed a message full of enthusiasm and commitment, highlighting the importance of academic excellence as a fundamental pillar of the training of new professionals in ophthalmology, remembering how Barraquer remains at the forefront in the field of ophthalmology.
Lecture on the parallels between medical specialties
Next, Dr. Pedro Clarós, specialist in Otorhinolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery and member of Royal National and International Medical Academies, offered the conference entitled “Parallelisms between otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology”, in which he underlined the connections between both medical specialties and the relevance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The event culminated with the official opening of the course by Prof. Javier Lafuente, Grand Rector of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and Dr. Esperanza L. Gómez, former Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the International University of Catalonia (UIC), representing Dr. Esther Calbo, Dean of this institution, who congratulated the students for their dedication and encouraged them to make the most of this new stage of learning.
The day concluded with an aperitif that offered a relaxed space for attendees, where they could share experiences, strengthen professional ties and celebrate together the beginning of a new academic year.
