Methodology
The procedure used to reach research objectives is based on projects involving collaborative work. A group of researchers and a team of technicians who lend support during implementation are assigned to each study.
General objectives of the research department:
- To expand knowledge of ophthalmology via translational and experimental research, developing new surgical techniques, material and ophthalmic procedures.
- To generate new scientific knowledge, conducting our own clinical studies in collaboration with other centres and external sponsors to respond to unanswered questions posed in regular clinical ophthalmic practice.
- To support the dissemination of ophthalmology-related knowledge, participating in the organisation, implementation and teaching of courses run by the Barraquer Institute.
Structure
The research department is split into three areas. They work in a coordinated way, but they have enough independence to undertake projects specific to their area of work.

Experimental research
The area of experimental research undertakes translational studies, that is, lab studies with human tissue and other material, but with direct clinical applicability.
Clinical research
The area of clinical research carries out retrospective, prospective, observational studies and clinical trials (intervention studies) sponsored by the Centre itself or in association with other health centres, universities or research centres.
Clinical trials
The area of clinical trials uses this type of study, which aim to provide top quality evidence for clinical practice. Currently, this type of study, In the majority of cases, has an external sponsor, which is usually a pharmaceutical lab.
