22/06/2026

On 17 June, the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre hosted the XXVIII Conference on occupational risk prevention in the healthcare sector, organised under the title Age and gender perspective in the healthcare sector. The event, organised by the Prevention Service of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre in collaboration with the Societat Catalana de Salut Laboral, brought together professionals from different hospitals, healthcare centres and prevention services across Catalonia, with the aim of sharing experiences, reflecting on common challenges and addressing prevention from a broader and more inclusive perspective.

The institutional welcome was given by Prof. Rafael I. Barraquer, medical director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, together with Dr Ramón Mur Garcés, president of the Col·legi de Metges de Lleida and of the Consell de Col·legis de Metges de Catalunya. In his speech, Professor Barraquer highlighted the importance of caring for the physical and mental health of healthcare professionals, underlining the essential role of prevention services and basic health units in the wellbeing of teams. In this regard, he recalled that, at Barraquer, caring for professionals is also a way of providing better care for patients, in line with the motto: “let us treat patients as we would like to be treated ourselves”.

One of the most notable moments of the event was journalist Ima Sanchís’ interview with Dr Elena Barraquer, a session that offered the opportunity to share her career, her humanistic vision of medicine and her commitment to people-centred ophthalmological care.

The programme also included the inaugural lecture by Dr Elvira Bisbe i Vives, President of the Col·legi Oficial de Metges de Barcelona, as well as various round tables dedicated to prevention throughout life from the perspective of gender and age, with the participation of specialists in gynaecology, ophthalmology, urology, neurology, psychology and occupational health.

The event concluded with words of thanks and the handover to the next edition. Dr Carmen Otero Sierra, specialist in Occupational Medicine at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, passed the baton to Xavier Martínez Jiménez, Head of the Prevention Service at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, the organisation that will host the next edition of the conference.

After the closing session, attendees shared a meal and were able to take a guided tour of the facilities of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, bringing to a close a day of meeting, exchange and shared reflection.

With this edition, the conference once again consolidated its role as a meeting point for prevention professionals in the healthcare sector, reinforcing the importance of caring for those who care for others.
